. . . . . .
Pale gold and angry,
what do you want with me?
You push and scatter all the
early morning glitter to make
way for yourself. Egotist.
Fine, then. Follow me.”

So we bought our first ‘together’ cards to send off for Christmas. I went down to Page One Books last night and dug through the regional artisan cards until I finally settled on four different boxes of sketched and painted cards and spent my (ouch) $50 and came home and dumped them on my desk.
We’ve been together for more than two years, it was time – right? People do this stuff together, don’t they? Seems perfectly normal, no? But you wouldn’t believe the amount of energy we put into it.
“Do we send them together?”
“Do we each do our own to our own people?”
“But aren’t they technically our people now?”
“Do we each write out our own but all sign it?”
“Would it seem weird if we sent out separate cards?”
“Are you allowed to send out joint holiday cards if you don’t actually live together yet?”
“Are we a… family??”
“Do we even have to do cards at all?”
“What does it all mean!”
We spent at least two weeks in this place. It was like a bad Seinfeld episode. But it was getting down to the 11th hour and we were still mathematically evaluating the long-term effects of joint Christmas Carding, and finally at 8:17pm last night we had a “shut up and sign the damn cards already!” moment at each other, and that was that.
Now all we have left are the personal notes – and that only comes with just a few minor remaining decisions, like: Who writes? Who signs? Do we both? What do we say? Do we put our names separately, or with an “&” in the middle? Is holiday sentiment legally binding? Does this mean we have to get married?…

invisible things
Come play with me.
Hide and seek with the mountains.
Red rover with the coyotes.
King of the hill with the sky.
Let’s chase the fog in and out of the valleys.
And lure the sun back down on our faces.
Rub yourself on my skin and breathe me.
Let the blank air burn in your nostrils.
Blink the crystals from your eyelashes.
Find the life roaring above and beneath us.
Remember what you came to me for.
Lick open the paradox and squeeze yourself inside.
