sticker shock absorption

I remember in early 1996 when we first moved to the Seattle area.

“$750?! I’m not paying $750 a month for a two bedroom house!”

Shortly thereafter, we moved in.
And I remember when we moved to Reno in 1998.

“$1,000?! I’m not paying $1,000 for a three bedroom house!”

We were in by the weekend.
Fast forward to Albuquerque in 2003…

“$1200? Are you sure? I’d really rather not pay $1200 a month..”

We, of course, did.
And then rural Santa Fe in January of last year…

“$1550?? Fifteen-hundred-fifty? Are you crazy??”

.. and of course here we are.
Days ago, in the courtyard of a modest (though terrific) house
near the Santa Fe plaza:

“$1900? That’s not bad.”
