twelve hours until we leave
Today was such a whirlwind day that now that’s it’s zipping up and closing down, I’m still spinning and can’t unravel myself. I’ve already got the suitcase and backpack nearly packed, just waiting for our PJs once we get up and dressed in the morning. Everything else is ready to go.
All five of us are meeting for breakfast earlier tomorrow morning than I’d planned - my Dad’s nervous idea so he can send me off faster toward tomorrow night’s hotel in the Smoky Mountains before the band of dangerous storms moving across the Midwest right now reaches me on the road.
I write down directions to my hotel as I hold this window open, knowing there was something else I wanted to say but losing it just now. Five bucks more this time than the string of $45 nights I was scoring on the way out, but I won’t be greedy. It’ll be my last day and night alone with Sarah on the road before Shane flies out to join us Sunday for the rest of the way home.
Oh.. I know:
As barkers go, I ought to get a better sense for trees.

in myrtle beach
The beach is right across the street, a five minute walk on a slow day, and I’ve yet to get over there since I arrived on Monday. I’m hoping for tomorrow. But if I have to work today, at least it’s nice sitting here on the floor by the open balcony doors, with only a tiny lamp on and the light of the laptop, the pool and cabana lights twinkling below and the moody Atlantic swirling and growling around just beyond them.Today was mostly fog and rain. I’m trying to be a trooper and not mention the humidity.
Oops.

greetings from memphis
Tonight I have proven to myself my theory that 30 degrees in the Midwest and East is more brutal than even -10 degrees in southern Colorado. I could barely stand to be outside for the five minutes or so it took to unload the van before I was shivering and my hands felt numb. What a wimp! Give me sub-zero temperatures in a dry climate any day.
Not many photos today, we drove nearly straight through and I had a lot on my mind. But I loved the velvety winter browns in Arkansas - a place I have to try harder not to like every time we drive through.
