eight things
Leland over at the Hermit Blog (who is making envious progress on his house), tagged me to post “eight things about me”. Since I’ve been at a loss lately for anything to put here, it can at least serve as my weekly “I’m still alive” check-in.
1. I am the now-proud owner of seven gray hairs, all of which are happy to have taken center stage on the top of my head. While I used to feel bitter about that, I’ve come to regard them in much the same way as Annie Lamott regards “the aunties”.
2. I was a Western Girl before I’d ever set foot out west. Growing up on the east coast there was always something off, not quite right or at home, and that very profoundly righted itself the day I crossed the line between east and west in Kimball, Nebraska, on my way across Interstate 80 about 15 years or so ago now.
3. … and yet I’d still welcome a good year or two in the thick of New York City.
4. I have a thing about hotel rooms. There are few things more satisfying or soothing for me than to be living out of a suitcase in a different room every night. I know of no one else who shares that sentiment in quite the same ferocity.
5. By the end of this year, both my kids will be teenagers. And one of them will have only a year and a half to go before he’s hatched out into the world on his own. Despite that I’ve had 16+ years to prepare for it, this still blows my mind.
6. … and that’s partly because I can barely even keep a self-sufficient plant alive under my care. Or a baby mouse named Harold.
7. I was an only child that spent a whole lot of time alone as a kid. Today, I still experience a lot of after-effects from that… like suddenly needing to walk out of a room and go be by myself for a few hours without explanation.
8. Every day I come up with countless new things I want to try, to experience, to see, to do, to share.. and I find absolutely nothing.. not one thing in life.. more maddening than the knowledge that a typical human lifetime is not adequate enough to accommodate even a fraction of those.
