Airstreams and motorcycles and tipis, oh my (err… I mean mine)!
Last year we bought a tipi from Idaho for $300. A big one, 24 feet and roomy enough for all the trappings of a small studio apartment, or for 12 or 15 people to sit comfortably in a circle around a fire enjoying George’s really good camp-rotisseried chicken and buttery, foil-and-fire roasted potatoes.
But I never got around to buying and peeling poles for it, so there it sits in the garage, folded up and dusty, just a few steps from my 1977 “project” Yamaha XS450. Tragic.
Now it’s an Airstream we’re making room for. Since the rapid changes of last fall, we’ve talked and talked about remodeling a vintage 60’s Airstream into a mobile studio, casting off everything else and hitting the road, wandering from place to place for a few months (maybe years) at a time. Visiting clients and friends here. Spending a couple of semesters finishing up my grad degree there. Camping with it and the tipi out by a river in the middle of nowhere for a few months over here. Using it as a mod pre-fab studio space parked in front of an urban brownstone over there. Parking it in a barn somewhere in rural southern Texas and taking off on the Yamaha to South America, hot on the the trail of Che’s legend.
You get the idea.
After all the daydreaming I’ve done about it, we’re finally ready to bring one home to work on within the next couple of weeks. Apartment Therapy posted a few inspiring Airstream shots yesterday, but my dream looks a little bit different. Stay tuned for more on that down the road.

Dude, that tipi would hold a bunch of Freddies pretty comfortably. Just sayin’. ‘09?
What is the towing weight for one of those smaller ones?
T- How crazy, off you go into the wild blue northeast! Are you towing an Airstream, or not gotten around to it quite yet? I’m sure you’ve found airforums.com by now. The tipi idea is pretty intriguing. Love to daydream. Happy trails from Wyoming!
