Northern Forest Canoe Trail
I wish we had more time before we go, if only to spend a month or two paddling and camping on riverbanks along the incredible interconnected waterways from upstate New York to Maine’s northern cap. The lakes and rivers that make up the 740-some mile passage are known as the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, the brainchild of three guys who set out to re-establish ancient but once-sophisticated water travel routes used by the Algonquin and Iroquois. The trail was finally finished and officially opened just a couple of years ago.
That’s definitely one of those groovy, why-didn’t-anyone-else-think-of-that ideas, and paging through some photos and articles from folks who’ve already done it has our butts all itchy — can’t wait for the search strings on that one — to be perched on canoe seats. This condition is not helped by our close proximity to one of the country’s best canoe makers.
They’ve got several sections that can be paddled separately or in succession, but I think to get what I’d want to get out of a trip like that it really feels like an all or nothing thing. After vicariously living in and on the water through books like River and Rowing to Latitude and Goodbye to a River and Off the Map and the Brendan Voyage and Canyon Solitude and North to the Night and Courting the Diamond Sow (gee, anybody see a latent life issue here?) in recent years, I think it’s safe to say I’ll eventually be back for it.

Ooh now you’ve got me itching
The weather here (UK)is just warming up. Time to get those walking boots out. The Canoe Trail looks wonderful. Think I might persuade J that a U.S. trip is viable…
The owner of the airstream sounds like a character - like one of our frequent flyers in the ER. The canoe trail sounds like a lot of fun in very scenic country. What is the longest portage?
Wow, that is fantastic. My butt has spent many an hour (and sustained many a bruise) in Old Town canoes bumbling along the Penobscot…but this is a serious trek! Go for it and shoot lots of photos!
Oh, and yes, the Airstream guy does sound like quite the…uhhm…character!
