Where is my poem of poems?
When I was 18 or 19 I spent a year collecting poems – one a week – until I had 52 poems set aside. I went through them and plucked a line from each one, then took all my orphaned lines and fit them together like a puzzle into a new poem. I carried that around with me for more than ten years. Now it’s gone. A lot of things like that are.
All I have now are these:
the hands at eleven thirty-nine
Japanese Paper
real estate
. . . . . .
after the doubt
amuse-bouche
out the inner hemispheres
in overdue translation

There was a time on this journal that I would write 20-30,000 words in a month and not even blink. And sometimes I’d do that while I was also writing dozens of 2000-word articles a month. Ahhh, memories. Times have changed, and all that energy that was once fueling this blog has been diverted to other creative projects like short stories and novels and non-fiction book ideas. And all of that freckled between my copywriting gigs (even an artiste should have a modest day job), and one thing’s undeniable: I am a bottomless font.
No comments, please.
The natural extension of these things is that I (along with tens of thousands of other wordy masochists) have signed on this year for the prolific, 30-day novel-writing event of NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month. That means I’ll be writing a full-length piece of fiction, about 50,000 words, beginning on November 1 and ending on November 30. That works out to about 1,666 words a day. Yeah, I know, demons, death, destruction. That’s because this contest is insane.
But it’s that nutty unlikeliness that I love about it, and frankly, it’s been awhile since I pushed that hard at something until I fell over. I could use a dose of that right now.
So what about you, think you’re you up to it? Wanna join me and see what we’re made of? Let me know if you register!
